'Modern Day Obsessions' is a publication I designed and illustrated in the spirit of French literary theorist and philosopher Roland Barthes. The book is based on Barthes' book ‘Mythologies’, at the publishing date one of the first critical reflections on postwar popular culture. In celebration of Barthes' 100th birthday, I designed a publication juxtaposing the original essays of Roland Barthes next to my illustrated short stories. The stories can be understood as an independent, updated, illustrated take on the original essays.
The publication has been awarded with the Rhineland-Palatinate Design Prize 2016 for editorial design and illustration. It furthermore has been awarded with the AED Neuland 2016 Upcoming Design Talent prize. The short story 'Make America Great Again' has been awarded with 'Honorary Mention' at 3x3 Illustration No.13.
